Survey Results

Transportation Miles Ahead of Other Requests

This last year, NVCN worked with students at Texas State to conduct surveys with programs across the country. Results are helping us paint the national landscape of today's Volunteer Caregiving movement. This month's featured survey result is Transportation, what appears to be the leading request of all the programs that participated. Melissa Odgen, coordinator for FaithLink in Parkersburg, WV made note of the pride their program takes in providing transportation. Member Spotlight

FaithLink was formed in 1996 by a coalition of people from the Wood County Ministerial Alliance and the Volunteer Action Center. Funding initially came from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Episcopal, Lutheran, Catholic, and United Methodist Churches of WV. In 2014 joined Community Resources, Inc. 

In 2016 we served 357 of the 410 care receivers we have. We have 225 volunteers that provided over 2000 hours of service while driving over 14664 miles filling over 560 transportations requests. These numbers are up from the prior year and we can only expect them to continue to rise.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, whether they are college students getting community service hours or recent retirees we try to get them engaged quickly. We are very flexible about how hours are reported. Either on a paper time sheet or email as long as they report their hours. We ask for at least monthly reports but again we are flexible.

The transportation team and our office work closely to ensure the best possible care for those we serve. Our volunteers are very good to work with families or our office staff to do the best possible job. Communication is essential, on both ends. Our request book will reflect between 5-15 ride requests per week. Our office works closely with the local hospitals and wound centers for unique transportation requests. This past summer we had the task of transporting a gentleman who had just been released from the hospital and while on his way home his engine blew. He had been a patient for 8 days and needed continuous daily transports back to the hospital for an IV bag change. Left without a car he was put in touch with us. So for the next 22 days straight the volunteers of FaithLink made sure that this happened for him. 

Being a nonprofit we are always fundraising. Our biggest fundraiser is our annual dinner that we purposely plan the week before Give Local MOV. Last year we were able to raise over $40,000. Planning this event is very important and having a captive audience is a wonderful way to promote your cause. We try to provide our audience meaningful information about our program throughout the evening.

Our program is known to help those we can or to be a good source of information and referral for others. Being a part of Community Resources has been a huge asset for us, we have the ability to reach even more folks through a variety programs such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, the One Stop Shop at our local homeless shelters or providing senior food boxes. FaithLink has become an important part of our community.

A New Year Brings Exciting Updates

2018 is going to be an amazing year for NVCN. So much has been happening behind the scenes and we are very excited to start 2018 strong. We are committed to equipping and preparing you to provide stellar service to your volunteers and those you serve. Your volunteers and clients don't have to go it alone...and because of NVCN...neither do you!

As NVCN transitions to new leadership, we send our heartfelt gratitude to Macy McNeely and Judy Tabert who have been holding down the fort the last two years. As Director of Member Services, Macy helped to stabilize the membership base, support the growth of Caregiver Canines, provide consistency in communications to programs and work with Board Trustee Dick Russell to recruit and grow the Network's Ambassador Program. As Macy transitions, so does Trustee Emeritus Judy Tabert who has been serving as Acting Executive Director for the last two years. Judy's history with Volunteer Caregiving is rooted in her contribution as one of the founders of Interfaith Network of Care in Milltown, NJ and NVCN's predecessor, FIANN. She has now passed the torch to Inez Russell, who was elected Board President, and Tammy Glenn, Vice President, who will be serving as the Acting Executive Director, a volunteer position appointed by the Board of Trustees.

Jamie Isom is NVCN's amazing Administrative Assistant. She is often the first point of contact for NVCN inquiries by phone and email. If Jamie can’t answer the question herself, count on her to track down the answer with one of her colleagues, a member of the Board of Trustees or by reaching out to one of our local programs. Jamie has been with NVCN since 2016 and is passionate about the Volunteer Caregiving mission. One of her greatest motivators is when she fields calls from family members who are in need of support and one of her greatest joys is when she is able to connect that person with local services to help. Lauri Barcelona with Barcelona Bookkeeping handles NVCN’s bookkeeping services, and while she works with the Board of Trustees as a monthly contractor, her goal is to make us feel like we are her only client. If you have questions or concerns about your program membership dues or a recent donation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. In her spare time, Lauri is a volunteer with one of our local programs where she serves seniors with transportation to the grocery store and friendly visits, sometimes accompanied by her daughter who enjoys the intergenerational experience.
