George Smedley, Volunteer Caregiver from Macomb County, Michigan
I started as a volunteer caregiver in 2013 after being forced into an early retirement from Hewlett Packard (HP). With extra time on my hands, I came across a flyer for Interfaith Volunteer Caregiving on the bulletin board of my church and have been volunteering with them ever since.
My wife, Sue, and I enjoy volunteering together with Interfaith Caregiving. One of the volunteer activities we enjoy is carpentry and woodwork, and we recently had the opportunity to help build two sets of railing enabling the residents’ safer access to their stairs.
When reflecting on my interactions with the people I assist, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. In addition to the satisfaction of knowing that we have helped someone in need, there is also a sense of personal fulfillment that comes from completing a project with care and attention to detail. It is important to me that we provide quality care, as if the project were our own. This ensures that the people we assist receive the best possible outcome and enables us to take pride in our work.
